Serilda has been touched ed by haunting eyes and a talent for telling unbelievable stories, Serilda has earned the reputation of a cursed liar in her village. Many consider a mere association with her to be an invitation for bad luck, and it's a miracle that she and her father are able to make a living.
When two moss maidens from the Achen Wood come seeking shelter from the dreaded Erlking and his hunt, Serilda's curse finally seems like a blessing. She weaves a ridiculous story about her ability to spin straw into gold, distracting the Erlking and causing him to forget about his prey. Serilda can't believe how well it actually seems to work . . . until it works too well. Serilda and her supposed ability are much more valuable to the Erlking than a couple of moss maidens, so he "invites" Serilda to his palace to test her skills. But Serilda can't actually spin straw into gold. Feeling desperate, afraid, and more alone than she's ever felt before, Serilda strikes a bargain with a mysterious poltergeist, who, luckily, possesses the talent she does not.
